The film and entertainment industry in Indonesia has seen quite a few promising new faces over the past decade. As life improves and the pandemic gradually subsides, the door has opened even wider for new talent. Among them is Denzel Jordan Pangeran Lantang, better known as Pangeran Lantang, a 21-year-old actor and YouTuber. Growing up in a Sundanese-Manadonese family with Indian and Dutch heritage, Lantang recalls having a fun-filled childhood. “I was quite a rebellious boy back then. I had tried riding a motorbike before I was allowed to,” he fondly recalls.
Born in 2001, the young actor says that despite his current acting career, being an actor was not something he initially wanted. “Being an actor was a spontaneous choice,” recalls Lantang. “When I was a kid, I wanted to be a footballer more. In fact, I still want to be one. He names Johnny Depp, Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker as his muses in the entertainment industry. “I grew up watching them in movies. I also admire Reza Rahadian and Lukman Sardi,” says Lantang. “They are multi-talented actors who can play different characters and really influenced me to become an actor.”
Lantang has starred in a slate of films, including the 2014 drama anthology “Aku Cinta Kamu” (“I Love You”), the 2018 comedy “Generasi Micin vs Kevin” (“The Micin Generation vs. Kevin”) and 2019 coming of age drama “MeloDylan”. The 2021 web series “Antares,” however, is the one that arguably catapulted him into stardom. In the series, he plays Ardhan Alcander, a vice-leader of the Calderioz Club. “Fun fact: Ardhan is a love person and he doesn’t care about PDA,” Lantang reveals. “In real life, I’m a different person. When I go out with my girlfriend, I don’t even hold her hand. Although it’s hard to play a character different from his actual personality, Lantang still sees similarities between himself and Ardhan – they’re both quite talkative. “I love to talk. Ardhan also likes to talk,” he says.
Another web series that Lantang starred in is “Twisted 2”. Released in 2021, the series includes four horror stories spread across eight episodes. In this series, Lantang plays Deri, a psychopathic character. “It’s also a difficult role for me,” Lantang says of his character. “I don’t talk much – I probably said a word or two but I was a psycho and had to play with my expressions. Imagine killing someone. You don’t just stab them: you have to know how to kill that person happily. It’s so difficult! In “Twisted 2,” Lantang shared the screen with a number of well-known actors and artists such as Samuel Rizal, Djenar Maesa Ayu, Kinaryosih, and JKT48’s Jinan. Sports, especially football, and exercise are two other things that the young actor is deeply passionate about. Lantang’s passion for football was first discovered when he watched the final game between Chelsea and Manchester United on television. A die-hard Red Devils fan, he says he’s open to another career if the opportunity arises. “If one day someone from an agent came to me and gave me the opportunity to become a football athlete, I wouldn’t even think twice about it,” he says. “I know I got a job in the entertainment industry, but hey, football is my passion.” The actor also admits he’s been interested in the gym scene since he was in middle school. “I’m a big fan of Vin Diesel and seeing him on screen made me want to have such a muscular body,” he explains. “I think there’s something missing in my life if I don’t play football or go to the gym.”
In 2021, Lantang teamed up with Indonesian model and “Antares” star Yesaya Abraham to launch a YouTube channel titled “Jak N
Jall. A pun on the nursery rhyme “Jack and Jill”, the channel’s name was created based on the Betawi nicknames of Lantang and Abraham. “Yesaya and I call each other by our nicknames Betawi, Rojak and Rijal. It’s like revisiting our childhood,” he says. “When we were children, we used to play in the alleys or in a nearby kampung (village) and mingle with the village children. They played in the ditch, I played in the ditch too. Yesaya too. Having gained 134,000 subscribers as of May 2022, the channel covers various topics and themes, from funny videos where the duo share funny football matches they have been in, to mukbangs or cooking shows involving weird cooking creations. Asked about other themes they could possibly address in their future videos, Lantang says the duo is going with the flow. “We make what we want to make,” he says. “After all, we created this YouTube channel to have fun and entertain our friends and fans. But we’re committed to our YouTube project. We’ve come this far, so we can’t just play.
The year 2022 has seen many people in showbiz take new chapters in their career paths. For Lantang, this is the perfect time to make new friends and celebrate friendship. “I made so many new friends in 2022. It’s really fun!” he exclaims. “I reconnected with my childhood friend and they have such a big circle of friends. My circle has been pretty small this whole time, but he introduced me to another circle, so I’ve met so many new people and made new friends. Regarding his hopes for the rest of the year, the young actor puts his family first. “I really want to make my family happy, especially my parents. start with my surroundings before looking outward. Lantang also expresses his lifelong dream of one day visiting the home of his favorite football team, Manchester’s Old Trafford stadium, as well as owning his own place.” I want to buy myself a house but I’m still not sure if I’m going to live alone. I still want to be near my mother,” he admits with a laugh.
